April 1 & 2 Wildflower/Whimsy Classes, Susan Edmonson, instructor
Wednesday April 1st, 3 hour class:  Whimsy Blooms (first two photos)
Cost $27 and a kit fee of $20 = $47.00

Thursday April 2nd, full day/6 hr. class: Sprout Like A Wildflower (last 3 photos)
Instructor Susan says this about the project:
“Sprout Like a Wildflower” is a fabric book.   It can be done in book format or just little individual pieces like a prayer flag or garland. Class members can do one or all of the pages.  Fabrics I used are linen, cotton, wool, osnaburg, velveteen, silk, velvet, rayon and more! Lots of embellishing techniques are in this project."
Cost is $39 + kit cost of $30 = $69.00

If you want to take either or both of the classes, email or call Pat Huber to add your name to the list before Feb. 1!  That's when the class will open up to members of other area guilds.  Better yet, send Pat a check for $47 and/or $69.
Any questions, call or email her.

Small Comforts/2020 March Mystery Quilt
Quilt Size — ~42” x 48”
Join your fellow members of the Blue Ridge Quilter’s Guild for a delightful day of sewing for Small Comforts, our guild’s charity quilt project. This is an easy, fun quilt, which you will want to make more than once!   It is perfect for that quick baby quilt, or gift quilt you want to make. Fun and definitely stress free!

You may use any fabric combination you wish, but they can be “children/youth oriented” quilts, as we plan to donate them. Think bright colors! We all have 2 ½ “strips and they work well for this. Or you may cut your own strips. Please use any fabrics in your stash. In the past, the scrappy quilts we have made have been wonderful. You will need to adjust for using fat quarters or yardage, but they are fine to use. As usual, contrast is good and many different fabrics work much better than all the same fabrics. To get the most out of our time, you should precut all your fabrics, allowing you to maximize sewing time at the March meeting.

You do not need the border and binding fabrics for the class. I frequently wait until the quilt blocks are made before picking the border fabrics so that I can make a better choice. If you have fabrics from your “stash” that you think might work, then bring them uncut to “audition”.  As usual, all batting and some backing fabric will be available if you need these.

If you do not wish to bring a sewing machine, we can always use pressers and helpers. You may also work on whatever pattern you might prefer instead of this mystery. We are happy to have ANY quilts that you want to make and donate. This is a fun day of sewing into the afternoon so please plan to stay! If you cannot come to the March meeting, I will email you the pattern after the March meeting if you will let me know you need one.

You may also ask any questions about the cutting directions at the January meeting.  I will bring sample fabrics for you to see!  Thank you so much for your participation in this yearly project. Never underestimate how much these Small Comfort quilts are appreciated by those who receive them.

Pat Sheets has again kindly offered to bring quiches for lunch and cookies for dessert. We would like to have some salads, so please bring these (and your drink) to accompany the quiches.

2019 SMALL COMFORTS MYSTERY
INFORMATION and CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS

Come to the BRQG annual Small Comforts Sewing Day! It will be after the March 6, 2019 business meeting. See supplies listed below for a fun mystery quilt day. The finished quilts will be donated to CASA. Any fabric will work for this quilt and you can use whatever is in your stash. Remember, using up any fabric you don't like allows you to buy more that you DO like! If you aren't a “mystery quilt” fan, then you can bring whatever fabric and pattern you wish to work on as a donation quilt. It is a day to get to know your fellow guild members and have fun, too.

Irons and ironing boards are always welcome and we need pressers if you do not want to bring a machine. Some of you have already volunteered. Thank you! I appreciate all those who come to sew or help during this stress free sewing day. Batting will be provided and many backs will be available to choose from to coordinate with your fabrics, or use your own if you wish. If you cannot come to the March meeting, I will email you the pattern after the March meeting if you will let me know you need one.

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS: 48 OR 80 squares (you don't need both sizes!)

48 – 6 ½” squares OR 80 – 5” squares (you could use charm packs from your stash if you have them)

If you are using the 6 ½” squares, you will also need 13 –1 ½” x 42” strips (width of fabric)
If you are using the 5” charms, you will also need 15 – 1 ½” x 42” strips (width of fabric)

FABRIC SUGGESTIONS:   (These are just suggestions!!)

Your squares need to be different fabrics, NOT all the same, some duplicates are OK , but not all of them!
For the squares...
1. all medium prints
2. all different prints from one color family
3. all different prints from many colors
4. half dark, half light
5. half prints, half a coordinating solid color
6. your choice!

For the 1 ½” strips, use a single color that contrasts with the fabrics that you have chosen for your squares
You will need about 2/3 yd to cut these strips.

WHAT TO BRING TO THE MARCH MEETING:
Your fabric, cut and ready to sew
Sewing machine, thread, and filled bobbins
Cutting mat, rotary cutter, and short ruler (6-12” will work well)
6” or larger truing square if you have one. Do not buy.
Scissors and other sewing notions you use
Extension cord
Lunch, snacks, and a drink, as we will be sewing into the afternoon.
